You need to read, read and read to master a language. The more you read, the more words you will see and the more you will learn about the language. Every new word that you learn will add a step in your progress towards learning the language.
Oxford University has recommended a list of 3,000 words to 5,000 words to learn. You can find them here. Should you learn these words first? Or should you build your lexicon through Reading? I would recommend Reading to increase your Vocabulary - it's more interesting that way. An interesting story or best-selling novel will keep you hanging on the edge and you'll never want to let go of the book.
